Top Ten Tuesday: Bookworm Delights

This is a weekly meme started by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they have a specific topic for a top ten list. Link up, visit blogs and compare lists!

Topic of the Week: Bookworm Delights
Oh where to start...

  • Book Covers: I can fall in love with a book based on covers alone. Of course you can't (or shouldn't) judge a book by its cover, but I mean come on, if a book had a gorgeous look and title I'll probably pick it up.

  • Near birthday release dates: Is it not the best feeling in the world to have a book released on or around your birthday? If you're really pumped for this book, it makes it all the more special to you! Alsoooo, great excuse to get it as gift, so yay free book for you

  • Bookshelves: For avid readers, book shelves are like trophy in our eyes. We get to see all of the books we have conquer and all of the ones we own. Its like our own personal collection and you cannot help but be like an annoying person displaying your achievement.

  • Recommending books (and it going well): I have many friends that always say they would read more if they find those books that would get them really interested. Have no fear, Nicolette is here with plenty of books that might appeal to you. There is no greater feeling than someone absolutely LOVING the book you gave them. You practically deserve an award ceremony after it right? I'll get my acceptance speech ready.

  • Meeting other book nerds and bloggers: You're not alone out there in the quest to blow through your TBR pile and make the employees at your local bookstore know you by name. Its great to talk with other people who have read books you want to read, who want to talk about books, and are just cool people. What's better?

  • OTPs: One of he greatest thing about reading books is getting heavily invested in the characters and then playing match maker. Oh the interesting conversations that spawn from that... We get so heavily invested in who we want to be together and we accept nothing other than that! We definitely get a little crazy but it always keeps us interested.

  • Bookish themed items: The amount of times I have coveted pillow bases, blankets, mugs, totes, hats, t-shirts, leggings, etc. is ridiculous. But they are absolutely irresistible!  what better way to display your favorite series than proudly walking around with the merchandise. Its also a great way to trap people into conversations about the book. What does this tote say you ask? Well then, step in to my office...

  • Meeting authors: Its the ultimate fan girl moment. You want to keep it cool, seem like you're not desperate but you totally are. But then its even better getting to know them as people and see that they are normal and have the tendency to write stories that keep you up until ungodly hours of the night. No biggie.

  • Quotes: Book quotes are everything. Its great to be reading a book and then BAM the next line is something so great that you have to stop everything you're doing to document it.  Then all of a sudden you have accumulated a large amount of them and they're all so beautiful and from different books but you love them all the same.

  • Reading: Actually sitting down whenever you can find the time to crack open a book is great. We read between classes, during breaks, while eating, hell even on the phone. I love staying up late to read, even though my body will make me hate it in the morning, I'll be okay knowing how much I read.

Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms #3) by Morgan Rhodes REVIEW

Gathering Darkness by Morgan Rhodes

4.5/5 stars

In GATHERING DARKNESS, book three of the New York Times bestselling Falling Kingdoms series, the stakes have never been higher as three teams push forward on a race to find the Kindred, the four elemental crystals possessing ancient all-powerful magic, first:
Prince Magnus has just witnessed torture, death, and miracles during the bloody confrontation that decimated the rebel forces. Now he must choose between family and justice as his father, the cruel King Gaius, sets out to conquer all of Mytica. All Gaius needs now are the Kindred - the four elemental crystals that give godlike powers to their owner. But the King of Blood is not the only one hunting for this ancient, storied magic...

• THE KRAESHIANS join the hunt. Ashur and Amara, the royal siblings from the wealthy kingdom across the Silver Sea, charm and manipulate their way to the Kindred, proving to be more ruthless than perhaps even the King of Blood himself.

• THE REBELS forge ahead. Princess Cleo and vengeful Jonas lead them, slaying with sweetness, skill, and a secret that can control Lucia's overpowering magic - all so they can use the Kindred to win back their fallen kingdoms.

• THE WATCHERS follow Melenia out of the Sanctuary. They ally in the flesh with King Gaius, who vows to use Lucia's powers to unveil the Kindred.
The only certainty in the dark times is that whoever finds the magic first will control the fate of Mytica... but fate can be fickle when magic is involved.

This book series so far is one of the best things since sliced bread and I'm loving it. Calling it the Game of Thrones of YA hold SO much truth. You never know who is going to live or die, who will be spared or betrayed by someone close to them. And as the titles of the series suggests, kingdoms are always falling.

I read this book in a day and half if that is any indication of how good it was. I couldn't out it down and then the next thing I knew, it was over! The third book of this series exceeded all of my hopes and more.
I must commend Rhodes on getting everyone up to speed with everything that happened in the past two books. Even if you only read the books two weeks apart you're bound to forget something, but never fear!

The fact that I could never quite tell what was going to happen made me want to find out more. The amount of intrigue I got from this book was astounding. This book was very fast-paced and full of action. There were so many plot twists that it made my head spin, but it was welcomed! The way I can be so attached to a character one moment then see who they truly are and wishing harm against them is amazing!
When it comes to ships, I have never been more confused and undecided as to who I want together. my INITIAL ship three books ago sunk before it could even test the waters. Now I still don't really know what I want. But I might as well take what the books is going to give me.

In Gathering Darkness, the character development was great. Cleo is really coming into her own and figuring out how to manipulate all of those who stand in her way of reclaiming the throne. She has become so much stronger mentally and actively displays her cunning and wit. Magnus is having a rally hard time accepting his role and the son of the King, brother to Lucia, and husband of Cleo. He does not know who he should be or what she should and shouldn't feel. Though there are some choices he made that made me angry, I can't say he hasn't grown on me. I used to be simply indifferent toward him, especially after a certain person he killed. I felt like I did not see too much of Jonas, but what I did see was the typical Rebel leader who values everyone under his care and will do anything possible to get King Gaius out of commission.

Do not hesitate to pick up this book if you haven't already. This is a great read that you won't regret!
If you've read it, let me know below!

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard REVIEWWWW

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, he’s tracked down by a man he’s never met—a man his mother claimed was dangerous. The man tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

Rick has done it again. I've been obsessed with anything he writes since the 6th grade, and this is no different.

Now many people might doubt Riordan's ability to successfully write three separate series about mythological gods. I will admit when I heard about Magnus and Norse mythology I was hoping that it wouldn't be a Percy rewrite. And luckily it wasn't. Magnus for one, is as old as Percy is in the last book of his series. He lives in a different state and has had much more different and harder experiences than Percy had at his beginning.

Magnus is a witty with a dry humor that can come off as angry at times. But like any other character he is a good person nonetheless with a hero complex. He has a certain wisdom about him that most people o not gain until their later years. And much to my enjoyment, he is very sassy and I love it.

I am so happy to be excited about another one of Riordan's series again. This book made me so happy. We got to see a character from the Percy Jackson novels which really surprised me. Another thing is some of the diversity! One of the main characters is a young Muslim girl, and that's great. Getting to learn more about Norse mythology was great. I've always known about the Greek gods, but the extent of my Norse mythology knowledge has to do with Marvel, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Middleson.

Even if you haven't read any of the other series, this is definitely worth the read. The great characters and struggles are even more worth the read.

The School for Good and Evil Review!

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

The first kidnappings happened two hundred years before. Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each. But if at first the choices seemed random, soon the pattern became clear. One was always beautiful and good, the child every parent wanted as their own. The other was homely and odd, an outcast from birth. An opposing pair, plucked from youth and spirited away.

This year, best friends Sophie and Agatha are about to discover where all the lost children go: the fabled School for Good & Evil, where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains. As the most beautiful girl in Gavaldon, Sophie has dreamed of being kidnapped into an enchanted world her whole life. With her pink dresses, glass slippers, and devotion to good deeds, she knows she’ll earn top marks at the School for Good and graduate a storybook princess. Meanwhile Agatha, with her shapeless black frocks, wicked pet cat, and dislike of nearly everyone, seems a natural fit for the School for Evil.

But when the two girls are swept into the Endless Woods, they find their fortunes reversed—Sophie’s dumped in the School for Evil to take Uglification, Death Curses, and Henchmen Training, while Agatha finds herself in the School For Good, thrust amongst handsome princes and fair maidens for classes in Princess Etiquette and Animal Communication.. But what if the mistake is actually the first clue to discovering who Sophie and Agatha really are…?

To be short about things, I loved this book. That should be apparent by the rating.
I haven't read a middle school type book in a while (my PJ days). But I knew that I really wanted to get into this trilogy.

To start off, I love the covers. That's what originally drew me in. After I saw them I wanted to know what was going on immediately. And I can be a sucker for fairy tales or story re-tellings, so this book was for me. Once I saw one of my favorite authors, Rick Riordan, gave it glowing reviews I really didn't have a choice now did I?

In the beginning of the book it was a bit slow with the action picking up. Some of the characters kept doing the same things, making the same mistakes, just a never ending circle of stupidity. But I stuck with them and when things got going, the ball kept rolling. I stayed up until 3 trying to finish it even though that would leave me with 4 hours of sleep. Nope. Didn't even care.
Now because it was a children's book and wasn't necessarily trying to hide too many things, some aspects I could predict for myself. And sure enough they happened. But this did not take away from the book at all. Considering the book is almost 500 pages, I knew something big was going to have to happen. And I will admit, the ending was NOT what I expected it to be at all. I didn't see it coming until it slammed me in the face and I closed the book. Luckily I had the second book handy and I'm already a 100 pages in today.

Our main characters in this book are the dark and broody Agatha and the pretty princess Sophie. polar opposites but best friends nonetheless, which I love. I also loved how against all odds, Agatha was put in the School for Good with chivalrous knights to be and Grooms Rooms while Sophie got Doom Rooms and Henchmen. Both felt out of place but there was a deeper meaning as to why they were meticulously placed where they were. Though they may look a certain way, whatever truths lay in their hearts is what really had to be shown.
It is very entertaining to see everyone disapprove of a witch and princess being friends, yet they don't care.
Sophie's constant sniveling and whining could work me sometimes, but I understood because in her mind she was a princess and that's what princesses do. And I loved watching Agatha grow into her own as someone Good even though she and everyone else around her thought her Evil based on appearances alone

This book challenges the reader to not judge a book by its cover. Someone may prefer to be alone, wear black, and seem socially awkward, but they could have the kindest and purest heart out there. Overall, this is a great book with friendship, love, beauty, ugly and all the in between. Loyalties are tested and relationships are formed and bonds are broken.

Waiting on Wednesday!

Waiting on Wednesday hosted by Breaking the Spine

What I'm waiting for this week:

The Winner's Kiss by Marie Rutkoski
This is the third and final book in the Winner's Curse trilogy

Expected publication: March 29th

War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it, with the East as his ally and the empire as his enemy. He’s finally managed to dismiss the memory of Kestrel, even if he can’t quite forget her. Kestrel turned into someone he could no longer recognize: someone who cared more for the empire than for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she cared for him. At least, that’s what he thinks.

But far north lies a work camp where Kestrel is a prisoner. Can she manage to escape before she loses herself? As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover unexpected roles in battle, terrible secrets, and a fragile hope. The world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and Kestrel and Arin are caught between. In a game like this, can anybody really win?

Let me know below if you're excited for it to or f you want to start the series!

My Favorite OTPs of 2015

Hey all! I feel like talking about my OTPs right now, so I'm gonna do it.
Only one of these is a spoiler but still, you are being forewarned. I'm putting a picture of the book before the rant so you can know to keep scrolling

5.

Charles and Anna have been apart of my life since 2008. This is one of the adult series that  read and it's all about werewolves and things that go bump in the night. I really love these two together because they complete the other. I also appreciate that it wasn't really insta love or anything like that. They genuinely love each other and care for one other. Whenever a book in this series comes out I have to get it because I have loved these two for the longest time.

4.

This book was such a good read for me. I just flew through it and before I knew it, I was done! I know I'm pretty late to the Lunar Chronicles party but hey, better late than never. Prince Kai and Cinder seem so cute together. She does everything in her power to make sure Kai does NOT like her but he does he anyway. They are both very down to earth people (get the joke?). I see a nice future for them once they get all the mess sorted out.

3. Slight Spoiler

Now this series is truly the Game of Thrones of YA in my opinion. Nobody can be happy for even a second! Cleo and Theon. I had all types of plans for them. Fighting again Gaius and the Chief. Arguing with her father because she loves him. Him just being an overall badass. But nooooo. We don't get that chance cause Magnus had to be a little bitch! But oh he feels bad and that makes it better hmm? Sorry, rant. I almost freaking cried. I really go for the whole princess/prince falling in love with some lowly commoner that is frowned upon. So I guess Cleo will end up with someone else, but they certainly aren't my OTP at the moment. R.I.P. Cleo and Theon relationship *Hunger Games whistle*

2.

For one, the amount of love that I have for this book is insurmountable. This book warms my soul. Khalid and Shazi are goals. Okay yeah so he has a curse on him and she wants to kill him to avenge her best friends death. But affteerrr all of that, they're great. It's the small things that they do that make them so great. One of my favorite scenes is When Khalid is just absentmindedly playing with Shazi's bangles and her arm. Out of boredom yes, but it still meant so much. The amount of times I squealed during the book was ridiculous. Some say they had insta love but could not be further from the truth. The plots of kill him 3/4 of the book! Even when she admits to herself that she loves him she is still thinking of ways to kill him! A typical married couple of course haha
They're awesome and I want to be friends with them and see them be cute. The end.

DRUM ROLL PLEASE....

SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT CAUGHT UP IN IN THE THRONE OF GLASS SERIES! THIS IS YOUR STOP

1.
I would like to start off by saying I did not always like Rowan. In fact I pretty much tried not to like him. I stumbled upon a spoiler as I started Heir of Fire and found out they would be together for the most part. But I wanted to make my own opinion about him and be stubborn. From the very beginning I was all about Celaena and Chaol. Despite how things ended on huge spiky rocks after Crown of Midnight, I still loved them. I had invested two books into them. I'm loyal thank you. Even through Heir of Fire I tried staying loyal and tried to ignore the information I already knew. But hey a girl can only take so much. And to be honest, I DESPISE Chaol now. He has turned into such a dick and I really don't like it. I didn't even think that was possible but I do and that's that. moving on.
Aelin and Rowan are the best. He has pulled her out of the darkness that is Aelin and brought her into the light. They have such a strong bond, they're friggin carranam! Wen he made his appearance in Queen of Shadows I was fist pumping like an idiot. I wanted him to show up Chaol so badly. But he does that by breathing so once again, moving on. They're in sync with each other and know the other well. It's clear they would die for each other without hesitation. Lets not forget the sexual tension lingering around them 24/7, I cannot take it, Sarah J. Mass take the wheel.
This is THE OTP. Yeah I have other like in my PJ books, buttt this is for 2015.
So love them in all of their Fae glory

HUGE BOOKHAUL!!

ARC Review: Boost by D.A. Paul

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

They call it a boost.

It’s the buzz you get from absorbing the spiritual energy of the dead, and it absolutely terrifies Lidia Powell.

Shortly after meeting Ander at summer camp, Lidia is thrust into the world of psychic mediums and brought to a new school. At Mountain Heights Academy, even a casual pizza-date is accompanied by a ghost, and only a frightened uberdork would refuse the boost. To Lidia, the peer pressure to absorb phantom apparitions is horrifying, but to everyone else, it's the drug of choice.

However, when one of the students delves into dark energy, Lidia suspects that a boost isn’t as innocent as it seems. Soon, the boost becomes an addiction and Lidia must act fast before the changes become irreversible.

I originally received this book in July by D.A. Paul in exchange for an honest review. I wanted to wait until October since it's a book involving ghosts and all things that go bump in the night.
Why is the cover sooo cool??

This book was awesome. In high school I mostly read paranormal stories instead of fantasy like I do now. And boy have I missed it.
Boost is an amazing book. I really love the concept behind it of being able to see ghosts. Yeah I have read other books with this aspect before, but they surely weren't trying to absorb any energy from them. That's what really drew me in to the book. I felt that it was such a fresh concept.

Since this book is apart of my October TBR, I just picked it up the other day, and now I'm done. I actually could not stop reading. I looked at the clock last night and saw it 4:05am and I still didn't want to sleep! I was too hooked on the story. Shoot, I was the addicted one.

Lidia is our main character in the book and she is pretty cool. She isn't some fearless warrior per se but she is not a coward either. If she does not think that something is right or just, she will speak on it and do what is right. And I really appreciate that about her. Being thrust into a world that was not her, and where she felt she did not belong, she handled it pretty well in my opinion and tried her hardest. As for Ander, I really liked him too. I thought he was pretty funny and a quick thinker. He is showing Lidia the ropes to a world she never even knew existed, since she is pretty late in the game.
I don't want to say too much and spoil and of the good details.

Because the worlds where boosts and ghosts exists is new for Lidia, of course she has to be shown the ropes and Ander does this. I would have liked it more if some of the thins were not explained to us as if they were in  a text book. Perhaps if it was in dialogue instead. Also I wish we would have introduced the ghost seeing aspect a little earlier. I feel like Lidia should have been randomly seeing them her whole life instead of suddenly at 16. Unless I was too eager to flip through the pages and missed something.

I recommend everyone to give this book a try and just see what I mean by it. There are ghosts, being being high, teenage language, a love triangle, and some people who end up doing some very bad things. I am so glad that I was given the opportunity to read this amazing book! So thank you to D.A.
And I would like to when the second book is coming out so I can get it immediately :)

Shatter Me Review

Rating: 4/5 stars

I have a curse
I have a gift

I am a monster
I'm more than human

My touch is lethal
My touch is power

I am their weapon
I will fight back

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Yes I know. The amount of old but great series that I am just starting is astounding. But its okay, cause better late than never is how I go about it.
Now on to the book.

Wow. Tahereh Mafi's writing blew me away. I fell in love with it almost immediately. It was so compelling and enticing from the very start. I was hooked before I could even blink.
One thing that I absolutely loved was how she would have scratched out some of the words when Juliette would think something, and but say something else or rethink it. I loved it because it so realistic to how we actually think or choose not to say/think about something.

The story itself was such an interesting one. Juliette who had been mentally and emotionally abused for most, if not all, of her life. That would break most people. Drive them to hurt those who hurt them, or to just give up completely. But once Juliette sees her silver lining, she goes for it an it makes her all the stronger

I will admit the love interest did not make me swoon once I finally got to that part. And to be honest something I read is making me feel a little wary toward him, but perhaps I'm being dramatic. Every now and then it takes the second book in a series for me to love the guy and to see just how awesome he is and this could very well be that case

I cannot wait to read more about Juliette and see the development of her power in Unravel Me.

If you've read this series or any books in it, let me know below! Even link a review!
